What Happens when they Google you?

 Presented by Dr. Chris McGee, Connected Learning

Have you ever Googled your own name? Most people have at some point, and there's a good chance your students, colleagues and future/past employers have Googled your name, too. Make sure what they find about you in Google is what you want them to find.  Whether this workshop is for you, or will serve as a unit plan for helping students create their own online presence you will learn these key facts:

1. SEARCH RESULTS. How do they work? How can I impact them?

2. SILENT DIALOGUES. What do people think when they see your results?

3. IMMEDIATE ACTION. Are people compelled to click and explore you further? How can they?

4. CONTACT. After people have Googled you, reacted and taken initial action, this is the crucial component.

It’s when you compound attraction with outreach. Because ideally, you’d like people to email, call or reach out to you in SOME way. Building an online brand is no longer an option in our digital generation, search results speak loudly, are yours saying the right thing?

As teachers we plan units.  We plan units because that's the way we've always packaged our learning.  What if we did it differently?  Let's identify the things that are the problems that confine us in our units, identify key ways we can rethink packaging learning and provide amazing, unique, innovative experiences where learning is the focus and students drive classroom experiences.  Come to this session expecting to participate, be pushed and tap into amazing resources.  Last year called, they want their lesson plan back.

Character education is a learning process that enables students and adults in a school community to understand, care about and act on core ethical values such as respect, justice, civic virtue and citizenship, and responsibility for self and others.  Often when we get behind a keyboard, those virtues disappear.  Let’s learn more about the online space and how to provide student opportunities to learn digital citizenship in settings that are supportive to learning.
