"Still, Chris McGee, an administrator in Affton School District and himself a self-proclaimed tech geek, heard about the Venture Café gatherings early on and decided to check them out.

“I remember going and being dumbfounded that people were sharing expertise,” said McGee, who was a classroom teacher for 11 years before moving into school administration. “Thursday night gatherings of Venture Café were my first entrance into what the world outside education was and could be.”

McGee wasn’t the only one who saw the promise that a dedicated collaborative space could hold for educators.

About a year ago, Mathews began speaking with researchers, school district personnel and community leaders about what would become Venture Café’s latest effort: EdHub STL.

“We wanted to see if what was being done in the entrepreneurial space could work in education space. It’s a place for people to use — not to tell them what to do, but to support and facilitate people who are already doing the programming,” he said."

What Happens when they Google you?

Presented by Dr. Chris McGee, Connected Learning

Have you ever Googled your own name? Most people have at some point, and there's a good chance your students, colleagues and future/past employers have Googled your name, too. Make sure what they find about you in Google is what you want them to find.  Whether this workshop is for you, or will serve as a unit plan for helping students create their own online presence you will learn these key facts:

1. SEARCH RESULTS. How do they work? How can I impact them?

2. SILENT DIALOGUES. What do people think when they see your results?

3. IMMEDIATE ACTION. Are people compelled to click and explore you further? How can they?

4. CONTACT. After people have Googled you, reacted and taken initial action, this is the crucial component.

It’s when you compound attraction with outreach. Because ideally, you’d like people to email, call or reach out to you in SOME way. Building an online brand is no longer an option in our digital generation, search results speak loudly, are yours saying the right thing?

Character & Digital Citizenship in the Classroom

presented by Dr. Chris McGee,

Character education is a learning process that enables students and adults in a school community to understand, care about and act on core ethical values such as respect, justice, civic virtue and citizenship, and responsibility for self and others.  Often when we get behind a keyboard, those virtues disappear.  Let’s learn more about the online space and how to provide student opportunities to learn digital citizenship in settings that are supportive to learning.

Local Educator Named Peabody Energy Leader in Education
St. Louis, Mo. November 7, 2013 – Dr. Chris McGee of Webster Groves School District in St. Louis was named a Peabody Energy Leader in Education for the 2013-14 school year, and awarded $1,000 for his dedication and commitment to students.
McGee’s philosophy of leadership in education is one that focuses on advocacy, enthusiasm and participation in order to ensure that everyone will succeed. As Webster Groves School District’s Curriculum Coordinator, McGee specializes in creating personalized learning for every classroom. He researches and provides effective instruction in order to create opportunities that are authentic and relevant to current events and that utilize the highest technologies available. McGee founded the nonprofit ConnectED Learning, which is designed to give teachers a completely free space to develop, share, learn and connect with other educators.
The Peabody Energy Leaders in Education program rewards dedicated education professionals—from teachers and coaches to librarians and counselors—who inspire and motivate youth to succeed. Award recipients are selected throughout the school year by a committee of top educators and business leaders.
“Outstanding educators like Chris McGee are the heroes who help students find their true potential to succeed,” said Greg Boyce, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Peabody Energy. “We are pleased to honor Dr. McGee as a Peabody Energy Leader in Education, and we thank him for working diligently to transform the lives of his students.”
Dr-Christopher-McGee

The Leaders program was developed in Missouri in 2009, and reflects Peabody’s commitment to make a positive impact in the communities where the company’s employees live and work by honoring those who inspire students. The 2013-2014 award program is continuing to accept nominations and is open to educational professionals of public, private and independent schools in designated communities where Peabody Energy employees live and work.
Honorees are selected from a diverse group of educators. They can range from veteran teachers to individuals in support staff roles such as administrators, coaches or counselors. Each 2013-2014 Leader in Education will be honored at an awards gala after this school year, where one will be named Educator of the Year and awarded $5,000.
